Freedom Township, Michigan

Freedom Township History Night Held on February 24

The Freedom Township History Night brought together about 30 township residents and other interested persons on Thursday night, February 24, at the township hall. Bob Miller, Township Historian, presented a talk on the 5-year old History Project effort, and the materials available for research in the township’s history file. He also spoke on the Buss Family, whose roots go back to 1835 in the township. Ray Berg spoke on the ongoing development of the Freedom Township History Book, and called for interested volunteers to sign up for a variety of projects.

Our thanks to all who attended and volunteered!

Several residents brought personal items of interest to the township history effort. We thank David Davis for sharing his historic 1830 Michigan map, showing Freedom Township when it was still a part of Dexter Township. Dale Weidmayer brought his Pleasant Lake School portrait and data. Several original photographs were also brought for viewing. Residents signed up for oral history gathering, field surveys, biography preparation, and other research topics. Thanks to Lilli Miller and Karen Berg for hosting and preparing delicious treats.

This type of get-together will be periodically held again to keep the township’s history preservation efforts going forward.

The formal presentations covered several subjects.
